Alaska Native Oratory Society Southcentral Regional Competition Saturday March 1st Your Voices Our Future This competition was dedicated to the life of Chief Marie Smith Jones | The UAA Alaska Native Oratory Society Regional Competition was held on Saturday March 1, 2008 in the Social Sciences Building (SSB), Room 119, on the UAA campus. The AkNOS Southcentral Regional Competition was open to all high school and university students in the Southcentral region. Students competed in one of four speech categories: Oratory, Declamation, Storytelling, and Native Languages. A special category, a Peoples Choice Award, in Traditional Introductions was also offered. Altona Rathbun, received the 1st place Oratory Award in the 2006 Alaska Native Oratory Society Statewide Competition. Altona was asked to come speak as an experienced AkNOS competitor. Through AkNOS Altona realized one of her greatest passions was public speaking. Through the power of the spoken word, Altona inspires audiences and her speech at the 2008 Southcentral Regional competition continued this tradtion as she inspired our student competitors. Jeane Breinig, Haida, was the keynote speaker. Jeane gave a stirring speech on the importance of our Alaska Native languages and revitalization efforts across the state. The recent death of Chief Marie Smith Jones, the last fluent speaker of the Eyak language, highlights the importance of language learning, language retention, and the development of teaching materials. Student participants and audience members were moved when Jeane played Chief Jones', The Lament for Eyak. Alaska Native Oratory Society Southcentral 2008 Regional Competition Results & Highlights 15 students enter All events were held in the University of Alaska Anchorage Social Science Building (SSB) Saturday's Event was a huge success. Fifteen University of Alaska Anchorage students entered the Alaska Native Oratory Society Southcentral Regional Competition making it our largest Regional Competition to date. There were student speeches in Oratory, Storytelling, Dramatic Declamation, and Native Languages. Judges and audience members said the Regional Competition speeches were more like Statewide speeches because they were powerful, focused, and well prepared. Congratulations to all our student competitors! There was one Preliminary Round and one Final Round in Oratory and Storytelling. Fewer than four students entered both Dramatic Declamation and Native Languages, so the Preliminary Round was the only round in those events. | Alaska Native Oratory Society 2008 Southcentral Regional Competition Results | | Oratory | | 1st Place: | Uyuriukaraq (Lily) Ulran—$250.00 1st place award | | 2nd Place: | Jaqueline Garcia—$150.00 2nd place award | | 3rd Place: | Melissa Okitkun— $100.00 3rd place award | | Oratory Honors: | Barbara Franks, J.P.
