Southcentral Regional Competition

Saturday February 21st

Lift Up Your Voices:
Speaking For Our Future

The UAA Alaska Native Oratory Society Regional Competition was held on Saturday February 21, 2009  in the Social Sciences Building (SSB), Room 119, on the UAA campus. The AkNOS Southcentral Regional Competition was open to all high school and university students in the Southcentral region. Students competed in one of four speech categories: Oratory, Declamation, Storytelling, and Native Languages. A special category, a Peoples Choice Award, in Traditional Introductions was also offered.

Crystal Dushkin, Unangax, gave the Keynote address. As Crystal told the audience about her upbringing and cultural heritage, her words left a deep impact on those present.

Students who entered Saturday's event self-identified as Cup'ik/Yup'ik, Lingit, Tsimpshean, Yup'ik, and Pueblo. They gave a total of thirteen different speeches multiple times throughout the day. Many of the judges commented that the level of speeches were more like an AkNOS Statewide Competition then an AkNOS Regional Competition.

Our congratulations to our 2009 AkNOS Southcentral Regional  Student Competitiors!
