Alaska Native Oratory Society 2008 Statewide Competition Your Voices Our Future University of Alaska Anchorage Rasmuson Hall Saturday April 12th This event is free and open to the public. | We are excited to hold the 7th annual Alaska Native Oratory Society Statewide Competition on Saturday April 12, 2008. Registration, orientation, and information will be held on the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) campus in Rasmuson Hall. High school and university students from across Alaska will compete in four speaking categories: Oratory, Storytelling, Native Languages, Dramatic Declamation and in a People's Choice Award category—Traditional Introductions. We invite you to hear our students speak passionately from their hearts on a variety of issues and topics. They speak out "even when their voices shake" so that their voices become our future. This year we're thrilled to have a Student Keynote Speaker and a keynote speaker. This year's student keynote speaker is Lyle James (Tlingit), 2007 1st Place Oratory. Lyle will give a workshop for AkNOS student competitors on Friday April 11th at Native Student Services in Rasmuson Hall and on Saturday April 12th, he'll give the keynote student speech to open the Alaska Native Oratory Society Statewide Competition. The 2008 Alaska Native Oratory Society Keynote Speaker is Iver Malutin (Kodiak). Iver is a member of the Sun'aq Tribe of Kodiak, the KANA Elder Public Relations Advocate, Alaska Commission of Aging, Alaska Native Advisory Health Board, the NRC & ANTHC Advisory Board, and served as on the Board and President of the Board of Koniag Regional Corporation and Afognak Native Corporation. Iver will open the AkNOS Awards Banquet and Celebration at the Alaska Native Heritage Center on Saturday April 12th at 6:30pm The Kicaput Dancers will share Yup'ik/Cup'ik songs and dances from the Yukon-Kuskokwim delta in Southwest Alaska. The dance group was started in 1996 by Ben Snowball, originally from the village of Stebbins. The dance group's songs were passed down and they're happy to share the songs and dances from their home villages. You can find more information about this dance group at the Kicaput Dancers homepage The UAA Alaska Native Studies Dance Class is taught by Marie Meade (Yup'ik) from Nunapitchuk. | | Alaska Native Oratory Society 2008 Statewide Competition Schedule of Events for Saturday April 12, 2008 University of Alaska Anchorage Rasmuson Hall Lobby Parking is Free (see map for location & directions) Locations for speaking events will be posted in the Rasmuson Hall Lobby | | 8:00am | - Check-in and Registration for competitors and judges in the Rasmuson Hall (RH) Lobby on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus
