April 4, 2009
The Alaska Native Oratory Society Statewide Competition will be held on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus on Saturday April 4, 2009. Events will be held in Rasmuson Hall with Competitor and Judge Check-In beginning at 8am. The Opening Assembly will begin at 9:00am in Rasmuson Hall, Room 101.

 8:00 am Begin Check-In and Registration for students and judges—in RH
Continental Breakfast for competitors, chaperons, judges, volunteers, and AkNOS staff
 8:30 am  Competitor and Judge Orientation in Native Student Services (NSS)
 9:00 am  Opening Assembly, Rasmuson Hall Room 101
 Words of Welcome, Overview, and Announcements
≈  Professor Nancy J Furlow, Director of AkNOS
≈  Keynote Speaker, Susan LaBelle, Sugpiaq
 10:00 am
Round 1 —All Speaking Events
≈    Specific room numbers & buildings posted in RH Lobby & NSS
 11:30 am
 Lunch Break — 1st Round ballots and practice room available for competitors
≈    Lunch and Refreshments available for competitors, chaperons, judges, volunteers, and AkNOS staff in NSS
≈   Audience Lunch — Lunch is on your own. Local Fast Food restaurants are located on Tudor. Registration table has maps.

 Round 2 — All Speaking Events

 3:00 pm
 Final Round — All Speaking Events
≈   Specific room numbers & buildings posted in RH Lobby & NSS
 4:30 pm
 Miracle Drummers and Dancers
≈    Hors D'ouerves available in NSS for competitors, chaperons, judges, volunteers, and AkNOS staff
 5:00 pm
 Announcement of Awards and 1st Place Speeches in:
  • Commemorative Narration
  • Native Language
  • Growing up Native: Looking Towards the Future
  • Storytelling
≈    Awards will be presented in each category
≈    1st Place competitor will give their speeches
 6:00 pm
 Announcement of Oratory Awards, the Passing of the Talking Stick, and 1st Place Oratory Speech
≈   Awards in Oratory will be presented
≈    2008 Oratory 1st Place competitor Jacqueline Garcia will pass the Talking Stick to the 2009 1st Place 2009 Oratory competitor
≈   1st Place Oratory competitor will give their speech
 6:40 pm  Closing Remarks
