Dr. Elaine Maimon, current provost of Arizona State University West and vice president of Arizona State University, is the chancellor designate of the University of Alaska
Anchorage. She will succeed Edward Lee Gorsuch, who is retiring at the end of June.
Announcement of Maimon’s appointment was made by University of Alaska President Mark Hamilton.
Hamilton said, “I am very excited about working with Dr. Maimon, who brings solid academic credentials and a great track record of building community partnerships to the university. I am confident she'll do a great job leading UAA and taking it to the next level of service to the community and the state."
Under Dr. Maimon’s leadership at ASU West enrollment grew 77 percent. She is a proven fund-raiser, demonstrating leadership in ASU’s highly successful $560 million capital campaign.
ASU West has created award-winning partnerships with the community and received national recognition (2002) from the Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) as the top campus in the nation in the area of public engagement.
Dr. Maimon received all her degrees – B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in English – from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in her junior year and later received her Ph. D. with distinction. She then served in a number of increasingly responsible teaching and administrative roles at Haverford College, Arcadia University, Brown University, and Queens College.
On accepting Hamilton's appointment, Maimon expressed her "excitement about coming to Anchorage to work with the outstanding people at UAA and its community campuses, the wider community in Anchorage, and the other universities in Alaska. I really want UAA to serve as a public square for the city, a place where the community gathers to learn, debate, develop, and celebrate all that is great about Anchorage and this wonderful state."
Dr. Maimon will earn an annual salary of $210,000, equal to the national average for universities of UAA's type and size.
Dr. Maimon was selected from a pool of three finalists forwarded to President Hamilton by a search committee made up of university students, faculty, and staff as well as representatives of the Anchorage and Mat-Su communities. The committee conducted a national search, reviewing the applications of highly qualified candidates from across the nation.
