Seawolf Debaters traveled to Vancouver, BC this weekend to compete in the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate's British Parliamentary Debating Championships hosted by the University of British Columbia. The tournament, attended by over forty teams from Canada and the United States, is a prelude to the World Universities Debating Championships to be held in Dublin in January.
The ten UAA students attending the competition faced competition from the top debating institutions in Canada and the US, debating issues such as the nature of Ariel Sharon's decision to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and the desirability of establishing an autonomous Kurdish state. At the end of the competition, four of the Seawolves ten debaters--Tom Lassen, Lindsay Eberhardt, Rose Helens-Hart and Michael Rose--were ranked in the top twenty speakers at the tournament. Michael Rose was recognized as the top US speaker at the competition.
The debaters hit the road this weekend to compete in the Hart House British Parliamentary Invitational hosted by the University of Toronto. The competition this weekend will draw teams from not only Canada and the US but from the UK and Ireland as well.
