Historians to ponder state’s best for Statehood fest

By: Staff  Apr 17, 2008

Call for Papers honors Alaska’s visionaries, innovators

ANCHORAGE, AK – The 50th anniversary of Statehood gives Alaskans the golden opportunity to consider and honor the hero citizens of their state, those whose dreams and drive advanced our interests and made Alaska the remarkable place it is.

“Alaska Visionaries: Seekers, Leaders & Dreamers” is the theme of this year’s Alaska Historical Society Conference, to be held in Anchorage in the fall, part of the ongoing Statehood celebrations. But while the conference is six months off, the time to ponder those visionaries is now, because organizers are soliciting proposals for papers to be read at the conference.

Here’s a chance to probe 50 years of Alaska Statehood and honor the often ordinary people who’ve made our state extraordinary.

Alaska has been touched by genius and innovation in scores of fields – in industry and development, politics and business, social and tribal organization, the arts and the law, athletics and adventure, altruism and defense, by Native and non-Native, born Alaskans and immigrants.

Which ones should be recognized as visionary? Who set the mark higher? Who forged a new way? Which of our fellows overcame obstacles, pushed the outside of the envelope, made it easier for the rest of us?

Professional, amateur and student historians, journalists, commentators and others are invited to submit proposals for papers that reflect on the contributions that shaped Alaska and, on this anniversary occasion, look forward to what our future may hold. Selected papers will be presented at the AHS conference, Oct. 16-18, at UAA and the Z.J. Loussac Library.

Proposals for papers are due May 30.
