UAA Anticipates the Next 50 Years

By: Lori Keim  Nov 23, 2004

UAA is preparing a precedent-setting, first-time event for the university and the State of Alaska. The Next 50 Years, a commemorative weekend celebrating UAA’s 51st anniversary and the installation of its new chancellor, Elaine P. Maimon, will be an event unlike anything this campus has ever seen.

UAA moves into its second half-century over the weekend of Feb. 4 and 5, 51 years since it held its first classes in what is now West Anchorage High School.

The centerpiece of the occasion is the formal, public Installation of Chancellor Maimon in the Wendy Williamson Auditorium on Feb. 5 Universities around the world have held formal installation ceremonies for incoming chancellors or presidents for centuries.

Rich with tradition and steeped in academic ceremony, an installation is the exchange of support between a chancellor and the community. It confirms the acceptance of a leader and establishes mutual good will and best wishes, as well as symbolically and ceremonially investing the chancellor with the authority of office and leadership.

As part of the festivities, a series of free seminars, led by faculty and community members, is scheduled for Feb. 4 and 5 for anyone with a love of learning and a desire to explore topics of current interest.

The university also will unveil its new History Wall in the UAA/APU Consortium Library during the celebration, conduct a special campus tour for high school guidance counselors, host a Green and Gold birthday party, and conclude the weekend with a hockey game against St. Cloud State.

A committed group of volunteers is still finalizing plans for the weekend. If you have any questions or would like to know how you can help with the planning and events, feel free to contact Megan Sumner in the University Relations department at 786-1764.
