Successful mentoring is topic of Complex Systems Group workshop

By: Cheryl Wright  Nov 15, 2005

UAA’s Complex Systems Group will host the dynamic "Proven Principles for Successful Mentoring" workshop on Saturday, November 19, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in UAA's Consortium Library Room 307.  Cost of the workshop (lunch is included) is $40.00 per person.  Parking on campus is free on Saturdays.
Erna Grasz will lead the workshop.  Grasz has led organizations, teams, and individuals to success in fast-paced, high stress, and result-oriented environments for over 18 years.  In her many leadership roles, she has turned non-responsive organizations into competitive, result-focused, stand-alone businesses, where customers wanted to use the products and where employees actually had fun coming to work.  As a technical and business leader, she is sought for her coaching and mentoring of groups and individuals.

Currently, Grasz is the Vice President of Research and Development at Nellcor/Tyco Healthcare, where she manages a team of 100+ scientists and engineers. Prior to her current role, Grasz was a VP/General Manager in a Fortune 500 semiconductor company.  She led multi-million dollar programs at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for 15 years.  She has advanced degrees in Electrical Engineering and Engineering Management from Texas Tech University and Santa Clara University.

Workshop Abstract and Outline:

Nearly all successful people have had a mentor at some point in their lives.  Their mentor may have been a friend, teacher, coach, or boss. Mentors use their greater knowledge and life experience to help the mentee develop their own skills.  In its simplest form, mentoring is people helping people.

Even a mentor's best intentions do not take the place of proven principles.  This interactive workshop will focus on methods for building the relationship, developing a career plan, providing feedback, and assisting your mentee in growing to the next level. You will leave this workshop with tips and techniques that you can immediately apply in your day-to-day world. Highlights include:

a. Are you ready? Self-assessment
b. Skills to make the mentoring relationship work
c. Tips and techniques for effectiveness
d. Skill building during the relationship--modules
e. Evaluating the process--metrics for success
f. Special mentoring situations
g. Relationship closure--helping your mentee fly solo

This workshop has been organized in part by JoAnn Neumaier, Municipal Light and Power, 263.5234 or NeumaierJS@ci.anchorage.ak.us,  and is sponsored by IEEE.  Please contact JoAnn for additional information about this valuable event.
