UAA Honors College student receives prestigious $30,000 Truman Foundation Scholarship

By: Staff  Apr 1, 2008

ANCHORAGE – University Honors College student and psychology major Candace Lewis has just been named a winner of the highly coveted Truman Scholarship, one of the nation's most esteemed undergraduate awards.  Lewis will receive the $30,000 merit-based grant which is given annually by the Truman Scholarship Foundation in recognition of students with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in government, non-profit or advocacy sectors, education, or public service.

A Wasilla High graduate, Lewis is focused on revising the current foster care system.  In addition to attending a full schedule of classes, Candace works full-time at GCI.  After receiving her bachelor’s degree, she hopes to pursue her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Colorado.

With Lewis' award, UAA became one of only 10 universities in the country to have had three consecutive Truman Scholarship winners.  Other universities include Brown, Georgetown and Stanford. In addition to these Truman awards, UAA's University Honors students have been recognized with prestigious, national scholarships like the Fulbright and the Goldwater and they have gone on to top tier graduate and professional schools across the country.

Last March, UAA's University Honors Program was elevated to college status. "The University Honors College helps undergraduates develop the leadership, academic, and research skills needed to reach their potential," says Ronald Spatz, Dean of the College. Through personalized advising and enhanced scholarship opportunities, the Honors College provides a competitive edge for success and career options. In partnership with all of UAA’s colleges, the University Honors College offers students outstanding faculty mentoring and staff support, strong academic programs, and an impressive array of hands-on undergraduate research and community engagement opportunities.
