CONFERENCE: ACSUS is pleased to announce a partnership with the North American Forum on Integration (NAFI) in support of US student participation at the 2008 Triumvirate, Montreal, May 25-28. Beginning in 2005, NAFI organized an annual North American model parliament called the Triumvirate. This innovative event brings a hundred Canadian, American and Mexican university students together to better understand the North American dynamic as well as the challenges faced by NAFTA partners. Students play roles as legislators, lobbyists and journalists, engaging in discussions on key issues affecting North America today. The Triumvirate is similar to the Model UN program. ACSUS will provide grants for up to ten US Students to attend the Triumvirate. Grants cover all major costs, including airfare to/from Montreal, and registration fees. The registration fee includes 5 nights hotel accommodation, 5 breakfasts and 5 lunches. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 8, 2008. For more information, or application procedures, visit http://www.fina-nafi.org/eng/fina/grant.asp

RESEARCH: The Global Change Education Program (GCEP) promotes undergraduate and graduate education/training in support of the Department of Energy global change research activities. The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) is a ten-week research program. Global change research encompasses a variety of technical areas including atmospheric sciences, ecology, global carbon cycles, climate modeling, and terrestrial processes. Since 2005, GCEP has focused attention on aerosols and their radiative effects in coordination with the change in the CCRD Atmospheric Science Program’s focus in atmospheric chemistry and physics. CCRD supports global change research through its Atmospheric Science Program (ASP), Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (ARM), Terrestrial Carbon Processes (TCP), Program for Ecosystem Research (PER), and the National Institute for Climate Change Research (NICCR). Currently, ASP and ARM research projects are examining aerosols and their radiative effects, and the formation of clouds and their impacts on climate, respectively. TCP and PER projects are focused on understanding the terrestrial ecosystems and their effectiveness in sequestering carbon. Other studies address integrated assessments of Global Climate Change and Information Integration. For more details about GCEP-SURE and –GREF, and to access electronic applications, please visit the website http://www.atmos.anl.gov/GCEP/ . The application deadline is February 4, 2008. Contact Barbara Dunkin at (865) 574-6440 or Barbara.dunkin@orau.org if you have questions.

RESEARCH: The Department of Biological Sciences at UAA is proud to host a NSF-funded summer research program for undergraduates. The 10-week program actively engages eight students in independent research in the areas of high latitute Ecology and Physiology Ecology. Southcentral Alaska offers exciting and truly unparalleled opportunities for students to particate in research in these fields and the Department of Biological Sciences is particularly strong in these areas. Students will have the opportunity to work on projects ranging from the molecular level to the ecosystem level, with potential research questions addressing terrestrial, marine, and/or freshwater species and habitats. Many projects will include both laboratory and field components. The program includes filedtrips, guest speakers, career development workshops, social activities, and a student research symposium. Outstanding undergraduate students from underrepresented minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Applications are due February 15, 2008. Visit the Biological Sciences REU website for application information.

RESEARCH: The New Jersey Center for Engineered Particulates (NJCEP) will host its NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site in Summer of 2008. During the 10-week program, 10 undergraduate students, selected on a competitive basis from various universities throughout the USA, will live on campus while working on challenging research alongside NJIT faculty and graduate students. The research projects will involve unique topics dealing with synthesis, characterization, and applications of nano-particles as engineered composites, focusing on developing fundamental understanding of particle interactions and their influence on final product, which may be existing consumer products (e.g. sun-screens) as well as novel materials (e.g., new cancer drugs or advanced-energetic materials). Students will benefit from a strong research group that includes established faculty researchers and their graduate students, working on collaborative activities in nanotechnology. Please go to http://mechanical.njit.edu/news/nsf_reu_overview.php for complete information, application form, and contacts.

RESEARCH: SURF is a 10 week research experience that supports undergraduate students for the summer at Boston University. Participants from institutions across the country are paired with BU faculty members who will serve as their research mentors. Students receive a stipend, research supplies allowance, a travel subsidy, and housing in a BU apartment during the program. As part of the program, participants also attend a series of summer enrichment workshops whose topics range from laboratory safety to research ethics to scientific writing. At the conclusion, SURFers are asked to present a 10-15 minute talk about their research to an audience consisting of their peers, other students, faculty, staff, and invited guests. SURF is offered to promote access to graduate education to talented undergraduate students, especially among underrepresented minorities. These fellowships provide research projects supervised by Boston University faculty in engineering, math, computer science, and in the biological, physical, and social sciences. The application deadline for Summer 2008 is February 15, 2008. All application materials should be received by this deadline. Visit the website: http://www.bu.edu/urop/forstudents/funds/surf/
