Research Opportunities with UAA Faculty

OURS Grants and Awards

  • Discovery Award: This $2000 award recognizes one undergraduate student each year who has exemplified overall academic excellence, including exceptional achievement in research or creative activities. Students must be nominated by their academic departments or a subcommittee thereof.  Nominations by February 5 will be considered for the 2009-10 award. Nominations should be e-mailed to discovery@uaa.alaska.edu 
  • Undergraduate Research Grants: Undergraduate Research Grants fund a significant undergraduate research or creative projects under the guidance of a faculty mentor.The fall 2009 deadline is 5pm on October 23 and the spring 2010 deadline is 5pm on February 26.
  • Global Change Student Research Grant Competition:  This award supports research related to global change with a focus on arctic and boreal regions. This award funds proposals involving the biological, physical, social or engineering components of global change (to include but not limited to climate change) and its effect upon arctic or subarctic processes, ecosystems, and/or societies. The deadline for this competition will be announced later in the year.
  • Alaska Heart Institute Fellowship: This award funds significant undergraduate biomedical research projects under the guidance of a faculty mentor. The fall 2009 deadline is 5pm on October 16 and the spring 2010 deadline is 5pm on February 5.   
  • Parasca Science Research Award: This award supports a significant undergraduate research project in any area of science or social science under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Proposals should be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Research & Scholarship no later than 5pm on February 5. 
  • Dr. Alex Hills Engineering Research Award: This competitive award supports one undergraduate engineering research project showing exceptional merit.  Research must be under the guidance of a faculty mentor. The fall 2009 deadline is 5pm on October 16. 
  •  Policy Research Internship Award: This award is presented to exemplary students in the social sciences and other applicable fields interested in the analysis of public policy issues.  Selected students are asked to contribute research and analysis skills to a forthcoming publication published by the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER). The fall 2009 deadline is 5pm on October 9 and the spring 2010 deadline is 5pm on March 26.    
  • Research Internship in Ecology and Physiological Ecology Award:  This award is presented annually to an exemplary undergraduate student in the natural sciences interested in gaining research experience in the fields of ecology and/or physiology.  The successful candidate will participate in a 10-week summer research program coordinated by UAA's REU Program in Biological Sciences.  Students must apply to the REU program by February 14. Visit the Biological Sciences REU website for application information.   
  • Undergraduate Research in the Community Award: This award supports projects that actively involve and meet the needs of community partners. The fall 2009 deadline is 5pm on October 23 and the spring 2010 deadline is 5pm on February 26.
  • Discovery Grants: The Discovery Grants contribute support to ongoing undergraduate research and creative projects. Students may apply for Discovery Grants on a year round basis via the online application process.     
  • UAA Consortium Library Prize: This prize lauds an exemplary undergraduate research project from any discipline which demonstrates evidence of significant scholarly investigation and utilization of library resources, archival as well as electronic.Applications are due 5pm on February 26.    
  • Student Conference on United States Affairs (SCUSA): SCUSA is an annual conference devoted to international relations, economics, political science, and related social science fields that is held each fall at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point. UAA can nominate two students to attend this annual conference. Full funding is available for two participants, who are selected in a competitive application process. Applications are due 5pm on March 26.

  • Alaska EPSCoR:  Alaska EPSCoR is accepting applications for 2010 Undergraduate Research Grants.  These awards are available to UA undergrads with qualifying projects in biology, physical, or the social sciences.  The fall 2009 deadline is October 5.  See http://www.alaska.edu/epscor for details.
