Over the years, UAA students have had good success at winning Truman Scholarships. Last year the scholarship was won by UAA honors student Candace Lewis. Previous UAA students who have won the award are: Umair Iqbal, Miranda Zindel, and Erin Trimble.
The Scholarship Program
Harry S. Truman Scholarships, which honor the thirty-third President of the United States, are awarded on the basis of merit to students who are college juniors this year and will be seniors in the 2009-2010 academic year, and who have an outstanding potential for leadership in a future career in public service. Scholarships provide support up to $30,000 for graduate school.
To be considered for nomination, a student must be:
- a full-time junior
- committed to a career in public service
- in the upper quarter of his or her class
- a United States citizen or national
How to Apply
Colleges and universities nominate students for Truman Scholarships. Professor James W. Muller is the Truman Scholarship Faculty Representative at UAA. Interested students should visit the Truman Scholarship website: www.truman.gov, print out the , complete it carefully, and submit it to the office of the Department of Political Science, with the following attachments:
(1) a UAA Truman Scholarship application coversheet (available as a word document or pdf)
(2) a transcript of college grades
*Note: Please do not fill out the online application on the Truman website. Fill out the sample application (available as a pdf or word document). Turn in this hard copy to the Political Science Office. If you are nominated by the UAA Review Committee, then you will then need to complete the online application.
Applicants who have been selected for interviews by the UAA Review Committee, consisting of the Faculty Representative and Truman Scholars residing in Alaska, will be notified by email, with interviews to be held on campus on Friday, January 16. Several students may be nominated by UAA to participate in the national competition. Nominees who later receive invitations from the regional panel will be interviewed in March.
