25TH Annual Behavioral Sciences Conference of the North

Friday and Saturday, April 18th and 19th, 2008
Undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and community professionals from all behavioral science and human service disciplines are invited to submit proposals for oral or poster presentations at the 2008 Behavioral Sciences Conference of the North (BSCN). Empirical and theoretical papers will be considered.
Celebrating 25 years of Showcasing Student Research at UAA
The conference begins Friday afternoon, April 18th with a presentation by Dr. Peter Lichtenberg, Professor of Psychology and Director of the Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology. He will speak on assessing dementia and the role of psychology in integrated care for the elderly.
The Opening Keynote address on Saturday morning will feature Dr.Todd Riniolo, Associate Professor of Psychology at Medaille College. He will speak on human cognitive biases, which, while probably adaptive to our ancestors, are not always conducive to critical thinking and may encourage belief in pseudoscientific claims.
The Closing Keynote address on Saturday afternoon will feature Dr. Todd Thiele, Associate Professor of Psychology at North Carolina University at Chapel Hill and Director of Research Services at the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies. Dr. Thiele will present his research examining the role neurochemicals (i.e., NPY and CRF) play in mediating the effects of psychological stress on binge drinking.
Conference Schedule:
Friday, April 18th – 3:00pm-6:00pm and Saturday, April 19th – 8:00am-5:30pm
Conference location: The Conference will be held primarily in the UAA Social Sciences Building (SSB)
Student awards: Student oral papers and posters are eligible for cash awards and will be evaluated by a panel of UAA faculty members.
Submitting a proposal:
Step 1. To help us estimate conference attendance, we are asking presenters to submit an “Intent to Present” by email to Dr. Gwen Lupfer-Johnson at afgjl@uaa.alaska.edu by Friday, March 14th, 2008, at 5pm. Please type “BSCN presentation” in the subject field, provide a tentative title, and specify whether you intend to submit an oral or poster presentation.
Step 2. Request “Instructions for Submitting a BSCN Proposal by email” from Wendy Hope at anwkw@uaa.alaska.edu.
Step 3. Submit your proposal by 5:00pm Friday, April 4th’ 2008, to Wendy Hope at anwkw@uaa.alaska.edu. Presenters will be notified by e-mail of acceptance and presentation schedule.
