The Council on Scientific Research


The mission of the Council on Scientific Research (CSR) is to promote research by faculty, research staff, and graduate and undergraduate students in basic and applied sciences at the University of Alaska Anchorage. The Council's roles and responsibilities are:

  • To monitor the nature and extent of funded research from federal and state agencies and non-governmental organizations.
  • To periodically compare research conducted at UAA with the needs of Alaskans in order to better target research activities and enhance the value of research endeavors at UAA.
  • To assist in the refinement of foci for research at UAA in coordination with Statewide research coordination offices.
  • To promote undergraduate research opportunities by supporting UAA programs which solicit, obtain and award funds for undergraduate research projects and those that identify and place undergraduate students in ongoing research endeavors.
  • To periodically inventory and make recommendations on needed research equipment, staff, administrative infrastructure and facilities.
  • To periodically review and make recommendations on the appropriate allocation of indirect costs captured through the receipt of funded research projects. Set priorities on the use of indirect costs recovered by the Office of Sponsored Programs to support and expand research activities at UAA.
  • To advocate for and encourage additional state funding for research activities at UAA.
  • To advocate for and encourage additional state funding for graduate studies and Ph.D. programs at UAA.
  • To make recommendations on ways of promoting and improving the undergraduate, graduate and academic research programs at UAA to the Provost and the Chancellor.
  • Serve as an Advisory Group to the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship.
  • Serve as an Advisory Group to the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies and the Provost on all matters of research.
