POSITION TITLE: Summer Residence Coordinator/ ACUHO-I Intern

DURATION: Summer 2014(mid-May through early August)

ELIGIBILITY: This posting is for graduate students seeking a Summer 2014 internship through the ACUHO-I internship system only.

DESCRIPTION:

In search of a graduate student to join our Residence Life Senior Staff team for summer 2014.

Successful candidate should possess professional passion for working in Student Affairs and be willing to contribute fresh ideas to our growing residential program. We welcome candidates who are energetic, adventuresome, committed, and open to new perspectives. Intern responsibilities will include the following:
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate Summer Resident Advisors (RA) and Welcome Week Leader(s)
  • Participate in planning for Fall student staff training and Welcome Week
  • Participate as a member of the Department of Residence Life senior management team
  • Oversee summer programming
  • Respond to critical incidents that may occur in the residence halls and apartments
  • Serve as a hearing officer for summer judicial cases
  • Share senior staff on-call duty rotation
  • Assisting the Director with special summer projects as assigned
  • Combining year-end data
  • Follow-up on spring judicial cases

Exposure to other Department of Residence Life and University Housing, Dining and Conference Services (UHDCS) areas include coordination with University Housing and maintenance staffs; planning for fall opening; and participating in staff development and recognition activities.  Other responsibilities include:

Educational opportunities will include exposure to other Student Affairs and Administrative Services departments and professionals at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) and participation in professional development workshop opportunities when they arise.

Past interns have enjoyed the Alaska summers with opportunities for outdoor adventures, especially considering the extended daylight hours.  Working with our uniquely diverse student population offers many rewarding experiences.  Interns enjoy the opportunity to take in many facets of the Anchorage and University communities, including the Division of Student Affairs, Division of Student Development, Dean of Students Office, Student Life and Leadership, UHDCS, and other university departments.

The University of Alaska Anchorage campus is located in a suburban area of the Municipality of Anchorage, and is the largest campus in the statewide higher education system. The campus also enjoys a wooded setting, inhabited by local moose and wildlife (friendly from a distance; great photo opportunities). The campus connects with walking trails to over 85 miles of recreational trails, with a magnificent view of the Chugach Mountain Range. Mount McKinley (Denali) is also a breath-taking sight to see.  It is only 130 miles north of Anchorage and can be seen from downtown on clear days. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

We are seeing an individual who is personable and possesses the passion for affecting residential students and staff. We seek a graduate student with previous RA staff supervisory experience, experience with Residence Life / Housing policy development, strong programming skills, good foundation, and understanding of student disciplinary issues, and experience effectively responding to student crises. Individuals having a desire to take of advantage of the Alaskan "experience" may benefit the most from this internship.
