Final Situation Assessment Report and Recommendations for Government-to-Government Consultations between Interior Alaska Tribes and the U.S. Department of Defense on Military Impacts in Interior Alaska.
In 2003, Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) approached the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution (USIECR) to conduct a situation assessment and develop recommendations to enhance the government-to-government consultation process between the Department of Defense (DOD) and some of the Tribes in Interior Alaska. In 2004, Resource Solutions was chosen to conduct the assessment with Dee Hunt (DCH Consulting) and Margaret King (Resource Solutions, University of Alaska Anchorage) as co-principal investigators. A detailed account of their findings can be found here.

Public Stakeholders Research for Human Health Risk and Risk Management at Federal Facilities and Formerly Used Defense Sites in Alaska.
From October 1998 through September 2000, Resource Solutions, a program of the University of Alaska Anchorage's Office of Community Partnerships, researched how rural communities in Alaska identify, interpret, and define the risk of hazardous substances to human health and the environment at federal facilities and formerly used defense sites (FUDS). The result of this research, which was funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Federal Facilities Restoration and Reuse Office, was to (1) verify and document the chief characteristics that contribute to mistrust between the public and the cognizant governmental agencies, and (2) lay the foundation for establishing a collaborative model that would work for public stakeholders in Alaska. For more information, we have attached three documents that describe these findings:

  • Project Summary Report for Alaska Communities- Rural Alaska's Participation in Contaminants Cleanup: A view from the Public Stakeholders' Perspective.
    -
This brief document presents an overview of how the project developed, the methods used, and the results and findings in an understandable and easy-to-read format.
  • Best Practices Brochure- Guidelines for Success.
    - This brochure conveys techniques and unique aspects of working in rural Alaska, particularly as they relate to contaminate cleanup in the state's village and rural communities.
  • Louden Tribe Case Study- Neelghu neets'edeneyh: We Work Together, We Help Each Other: The Story of Louden Tribal Council's Self-Governance Process 1993-2000.
    - This publication highlights how the Louden Tribe functions with other community, regional, and state organizations to develop economic opportunities in a remote area, where military contaminant cleanup activities continue.

Anchorage on the Move: Improving Involvement in Transportation Planning.
Anchorage on the Move is a federally funded project led by Resource Solutions of the University of Alaska Anchorage, in conjunction with the Anchorage Metropolitan Area Transportation Study (AMATS). The primary objective of Anchorage on the Move is to develop a set of improved public participation practices (see the Public Participation Guide) specifically for transportation planning. This project resulted in a Citizens Handbook for Developing the Anchorage Area Transportation System.
