Anchorage Campus - Safety & Security Services

The UAA Anchorage Campus is relatively safe, but crimes do occur here. The University Police Department (UPD), with jurisdiction over the campus in Anchorage, has commissioned police officers and dispatchers present 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist you. Although UPD can do certain things to minimize criminal activities, they cannot prevent these crimes without the full support of students, faculty, and staff.

The University Police Department is comprised of police officers and dispatchers. Working as a team, they coordinate activities to provide a constant presence and quick response to your calls for assistance, coordinating with UAA Parking's Call Team Officers (CTOs) to provide a wide variety of services, including safety escorts. Both UPD Officers and CTOs wear recognizable uniforms.

UPD solicits your active support in reporting all crimes and incidents to them immediately. Call UPD at 786-1120 from an outside phone, 6-1120 from a campus phone, or by using an exterior emergency call box.

At UAA's other community campuses, the on-site administrators, in conjunction with the local law enforcement agency, have established campus safety and security procedures that are best suited to the particular environment of that campus and provide support and programming for those procedures.

Most campus educational buildings and facilities are accessible to members of the community and to guests and visitors during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, and for limited hours on Saturday and Sunday, while school is in session. During semester breaks, hours of access may be greatly reduced. Most buildings are closed to all but faculty and staff for University-observed holidays.

The Anchorage campus provides co-ed on-campus housing for 950 students. Resident Advisors are on duty every night and during the day on the weekends. The Advising and Testing Center, Department of Residence Life and University Police Department provide on-going safety education programs to the residents. In addition, safety procedures for students living on campus can be found in the UAA Guide to Living on Campus student planner and the UAA Fact Finder student handbook. Storage of firearms, ammunition, or explosives of any type are prohibited within any housing unit. UPD provides a 24-hour gun locker for use by residents.

Exterior emergency call boxes are located at 15 locations across the UAA Anchorage campus. Calls made from these boxes are routed directly to the UPD switchboard. Each elevator on campus is equipped with a telephone. Calls made from these telephones are also routed directly to the UPD switchboard.

Do not hesitate to call upon UPD at 786-1120 or the CTOs at 786-1147 to assist you. Most callers receive service within 10 minutes. Some of the services available are vehicle jumpstarts, emergency medical assistance, personal escorts, vehicle unlocks, reporting road and parking lot hazards, reporting suspicious persons and activities. CTOs are generally available from 7 a.m. to midnight, Monday through Friday. Call UPD for other hours or when CTOs are not available.
