Zella Boseman Memorial Scholarship

The purpose of the Zella Boseman Memorial Scholarship is to offer financial assistance for tuition and other educational expenses to full-time students who are formally admitted into a degree-seeking program at the University of Alaska Anchorage, with preference for minority students.

This scholarship was established to honor Zella Louise Keller Boseman (March 4, 1948 - May 13, 1981). Zella was an Assistant Director for the Alaska State Human Rights Commission. She was an active member of the Alaska Black Caucus, NAACP, Alaska Women’s Resource Center, and Displaced Homemaker Program. She owned a crafts business and was mother of three children. Her individual accomplishments as capable professional women, a loving single parent, a creative businesswoman, and a responsible community member are exemplary.

Award amount is a minimum $500 per academic year

Qualifications:

  • Applicant must be an Alaskan resident domiciled in Alaska with the intent to remain in Alaska.
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 for undergraduate and 3.0 for graduate.
  • Applicant must be formally admitted into an undergraduate, graduate, certificate, and/or vocational degree-seeking program at the University of Alaska Anchorage .
  • Applicant must plan on enrolling full-time (twelve (12) credits for undergraduate and nine (9) credits for graduate) at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
  • Applicant must demonstrate involvement in community activities including charitable, educational political and social action organizations.
  • Applicant must demonstrate personality characteristics such as integrity, dedication, compassion, fairness, sense of humor, ambition, leadership, and responsibility.
  • Applicant must demonstrate academic aptitude.
  • Applicant may be an incoming or continuing student at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
  • Preference will be given to racial minority (i.e. Black, Hispanic, Alaska Native, American Indian, Asian American/Pacific Islander).
  • Preference will be given to first-time students or persons returning to formal study after a long period of absence.
  • Preference will be given based on financial need if applicants of substantially equal qualifications apply.
  • Applicants may apply for multi-year funding however, recipients must reapply each academic year.
