Civil EngineeringCivil Engineering is the engineering discipline that addresses the design, construction, and maintenance of public works such as bridges, airports, roadways, buildings, dams, and water treatment plants. At UAA, the Civil Engineering program has five areas of focus including: Water Resources Engineering (including Coastal Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, and Hydrologic Engineering), Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Geotechnical and Earthquake Engineering, and Structural Engineering. What is a civil engineer?Civil engineers are members of the engineering profession who do civil engineering. Most of the UAA civil engineering graduates work in one of the five specialty areas listed above. They might design culvert systems for routing a creek around transportation infrastructure; they might develop flood maps for Ship Creek, determining what areas will be inundated during the 100-year storm; they might design a new dam for hydropower generation or find ways to operate an existing dam more efficiently; they might design shoreline protection for a vulnerable coastal village; they might design a roadway extension project or develop plans for a new rural airport; they might design earthquake resistant buildings for downtown Anchorage; and they might help design secondary water treatment for the Municipality of Anchorage. Others might enter the field of renewable energy and design a foundation of a new wind turbine or design a cluster of hydrokinetic turbines to generate electricity for Anchorage or for a rural village on the Yukon. How much money does a civil engineer make?Civil Engineers right out of college can expect to make approximately $27.44 per hour or about $57,000 per year!
