Structures and Materials in Cold Climates

UAA College of Engineering has an active research agenda in the performance and design of structures and materials in cold regions.  The goals of this research program are to investigate the mechanical and thermal behavior of structural components and systems using experimental and numerical methods.
Current projects include:

  • Long-term characterization of Natural Fiber-Polymer Composites in cold regions
  • Characterization of large diameter anchor bolt behavior in implementation of improved tightening procedures for High-mast Light Poles in Alaska
  • Thermo-mechanical testing and evaluation of temperature isolation systems for steel frames
  • Development of latex-modified barrel-shell concrete roof units for developing country housing
  • Determination of updated probability-based ground snow loads in Alaska
