Intercollegiate athletic teams are frequently divided on the basis of school size or type of institution. In intercollegiate debate, however, there are no divisions of this nature. Consequently, UAA's debate teams face competition from some of the most prestigious schools in the world.

The program also promotes public discourse for its community in a variety of ways.  We host the Cabin Fever Debates, the Alaska High School Drama, Debate and Forensics championships, and the Anchorage Middle School Public Debate Program Championships.  We regularly promote public debates on issues of significance to our community and host exhibition rounds with high-quality competitive programs like the Irish Debate Tour and Stanford University.

The program’s success is built on a few simple principles: we genuinely value opportunities to engage in reasoned discourse, we understand world events and the context in which they occur, and we work exceptionally hard.
