Missions

1. Competition: to bring honor to the University of Alaska-Anchorage through competitive excellence.

2. Service: to provide opportunities for others to participate in critical public discourse; and to train others in the skills needed to participate in the political process as engaged contributors.

Competition

Service

Team Practice: We meet twice per week to work on collective practice and preparation.  These sessions usually consist of a short business meeting followed by brief assignments and reports and practice rounds.

Individual Practice: Members of the Traveling Team are expected to meet with members of the coaching staff at least twice per week to work on individual goals.  These 1/2 hour appointments may focus on brief writing, reviewing past practices and performances, skill development, etc.

Tournaments: The traveling team attends 7-10 tournaments per year, including regional, national, and international competitions.  Competitive focus is the World Universities Debating Championships

Promoting Debating: Host the Cabin Fever Debates intramural debating tournament in Spring semester.  Host the Alaska State High School Drama, Debate, and Forensics tournament each year.  Promote debating in Alaska middle schools.  In 2008, the team also hosted the first-ever world-style debating competition for high school students in Alaska.

Training & Mentoring: Hold workshops for debaters and teachers locally, regionally, and internationally.  Travel to promote debating through mentoring and exhibition debates.

Public Discourse: Participate in public debates on topics of interest to the campus and Anchorage community.
