Facebook is the most widely used social media platform, with 1 billion plus monthly active users worldwide, 618 million active users every day, 680 million monthly active mobile users, all who spend an average of 20 minutes a day on the social network.

Facebook is ideal for showcasing your department, program or group as well as helping to build recognition and create a dialogue between you and your audience. For many UAA departments and programs, Facebook is the flagship of their social media presence and we encourage everyone to join the social conversation with current and prospective students, as well as faculty, staff and the community at large. Create an "official page" for your UAA organization
Including "University of Alaska Anchorage" in your organization's title will make it easier for users to find your page.

Pages vs Groups

  • Pages are accessible to everyone, searchable and can be seen by anyone whether they have a Facebook account or are/are not logged in. Pages allows users to create custom applications, as well as provide more in-depth information. Pages are intended for organizations, departments and businesses to connect with users who like them.

  • Groups are geared toward small Facebook communities. Groups can be created by anyone on any topic and is a forum for people to share their opinions and interests on a common subject.

Facebook tips:
Respond to posts and comments. Even the negative ones.

Examples:

  • "Thank you for weighing in, we appreciate it…"
  • "How can we help?"
  • "Thanks for letting us know, we value your input and will…"

Be conversational. You can relax a little bit on social media and have a more informal dialogue.
Short and sweet. Keep your status updates short and to the point. Between 100-250 characters is a good rule of thumb.
Monitor/maintain your page. Make sure you're up to date on your page and that you are posting content to your page a couple of times a week.
