Frequently asked questions:

Why is social media important?
There are many answers to this question, but put simply, social media is an incredibly powerful communication tool. Ten years ago when Facebook launched, people never imagined the way it would change the way we communicate with our family, friends, colleagues and the businesses/brands we love. Being a part of the social media dialogue connects and communicates your messages quickly and effectively to an audience you may not have had the opportunity to reach.

Should my department/program/group create a Facebook page?
Facebook is a great social media platform to start with. This hugely popular platform will help you reach a wide audience and engage with current and future students, alumni, faculty, staff, donors and the Anchorage/Alaska communities.

Is it better to have a Facebook account, a Twitter account or both?
Pick the social media platform you're most comfortable using. For most, this choice is Facebook, but the option is up to you. When it comes to social media less is more. We recommend focusing on mastering one platform before adding another.

Can I set up a Facebook account for my department without creating a personal profile account?

Yes. This is the best way to set up your department's Facebook page. When Facebook created "Pages" for businesses they allowed them to create an account without having to create a profile page for their business first. To set up a page account for your department, you will still have to log into Facebook with your personal account, but will be able to create a Page account for your department without having to create a separate department profile account. Once you have created the account, make sure to add other "Admins" to the account so there is more than one person who has credentials to access your department's Facebook account.
