Application InstructionsPlease note that applicants must submit two applications. The MSW Program Application materials are to be submitted directly to the UAA School of Social Work. The UAA Graduate Application for Admission is submitted separately to the UAA Enrollment Services office with the required fee. STEP 1Provide transcripts demonstrating an earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Official transcripts must be sent by each college or university attended since high school graduation as part of the application for graduate studies. Order transcripts sent to the School of Social Work (attn: MSW Admission, 3211 Providence Drive, Anchorage AK 99508). Copies will be secured for Admission Committee review and the originals forwarded to UAA Enrollment Services. Order transcripts by September 15. (Exception: Transcripts from University of Alaska system programs or campuses are not required.) Please be sure to order transcripts from all institutions of higher education you have attended, even from institutions where the number of credits earned was minimal. Failure to order all transcripts, and late arrival of transcripts, are a primary cause of delayed review of applications. If you order transcripts after December 1, you are strongly advised to request expedited delivery. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that transcripts have been sent and that they have been received. The applicant’s undergraduate education should reflect a sound liberal arts foundation. In particular, undergraduate coursework in the following areas must have already been completed, or the applicant must be prepared to complete the courses before beginning the MSW program:
Additional guidelines used by the Admissions Committee in evaluating the liberal arts baccalaureate degree are listed in the Liberal Arts Requirement section. Note: Transcripts should show a Grade Point Average (GPA) in undergraduate course work of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The Admissions Committee may make exceptions, taking into account special circumstances based on their review of the entire application packet. A GPA in undergraduate social work courses of 3.5 is required for admission with advanced placement. STEP 2Submit a completed, signed and dated MSW Program Application form. Include with it the following: Three letters of reference submitted as part of the applicant’s packet and coming from one or more of the following sources. (Only three letters are required. If additional letters are submitted, the Committee may choose to review only three of those letters.)
A Personal statement: in response to questions and statements on page 3 of the MSW Program Application. The personal statement must be typed, double spaced and adhere to stated page limits. Ensure that your name appears on each page. Writing Sample: Provide one copy of an academic or professional paper you have written, between two (2) and seven (7) pages in length, typed, double-spaced. Ensure that your name appears on each page. You must be the sole author of the paper submitted. This paper will be closely reviewed for content as well as for correct grammatical usage. One review copy will be made for committee use; please ensure that the paper you submit has print dark and clear enough to be photocopied legibly. Do not submit client-related material as a writing sample. Current professional resume Do not submit a payment with the program application. There is no fee attached to MSW program review. Any payment sent will be returned to the applicant. Submission format: Submit all applications materials in one envelope with pages of each item paper-clipped or stapled together. Do not submit in a notebook or folder; these must be discarded prior to committee review. Ensure that your name is on each page. If you are applying for Advanced Placement Review please carefully read the following: Only those applicants who have received a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree within the past seven years from a degree program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education are eligible to apply for review for advanced placement in the UAA MSW program. Applicants requesting review for advanced placement must provide additional materials as outlined below which will be evaluated by the Admissions Committee. Acquisition of a BSW degree from an accredited BSW program does not in and of itself insure that the applicant is ready for advanced placement to the MSW Concentration curriculum. Applicants for admission to advanced placement must meet a higher standard in writing skills, grade point average, and the articulation and conceptualization of social work knowledge, than applicants to the foundation curriculum. Failure to provide all required information by the stated deadline will result in a denial of the applicant’s request for advanced placement. A GPA of 3.5 in BSW program core courses (course work in the Human Behavior, Policy, Research, Practice and Practicum sequences) is required. The Admissions Committee may make exceptions taking into account special circumstances based on their review of the entire application packet. Letters of reference should follow guidelines listed above under Step 2. Please note that a letter of recommendation from the BSW program coordinator or chair, coordinator of the field work/practicum coordinator or from the student’s academic advisor is highly desirable. Other recommended sources for letters are: Social work faculty member; other college or university faculty; work supervisor, or other professional; supervisor or colleague in volunteer or other community service activities. In addition to the MSW Personal Statement (on page 3 of the application), provide an additional response to all five Advanced Placement Review statements on page 4 of the MSW application. Responses must be typed and double-spaced and adhere to length requirements. Ensure that your name appears on each page. Provide copies of field work / practicum evaluations from the BSW program or a letter from the coordinator of field work/practicum coordinator or the head of the department/school describing the applicant’s demonstrated ability to successfully accomplish the goals and objects of field work. Provide a Field Experience Summary completed by the BSW Field Work/Practicum Coordinator. The Field Experience Summary is not a substitute for a required letter of reference.
