What: The institute has several ongoing projects covering three research themes: Ecosystem Studies and Conservation Biology (ESCB), Earth and Climate Processes (ECP), and Human Ecology and Native Studies (HENS).

Experimental Economics Laboratory
What: Researchers at the Laboratory use experimental economic methods to investigate fisheries quotas, natural resource management, Carbon Cap and Trade Markets, and a variety of other issues. There are several opportunities each year for students to participate in this research as an experimental subject. Participants do not have to have previous economics experience and can earn cash for participating.

Girdwood Renewable Energy Project
What: This group is working to develop a Girdwood Renewable Energy Research and Discovery Center through UAA . Field testing of small-scale hydroelectric, wind, and tidal power generation systems is proposed to be conducted in the Girdwood area, with the goal of providing research, testing, education, training, and consultancy services for small-scale renewable energy development and other sustainable low-environmental-impact technologies across Alaska.

Institute of Social and Economic Research
What: ISER conducts non-partisan research that helps people understand social and economic systems and supports informed public and private decision-making. Current sustainability research at ISER includes investigations of Climate Change, Health Care, Energy and Utilities, Fisheries, and Land and Wildlife Studies.

Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (OURS)
What: OURS supports academic excellence by providing funding for undergraduate research projects. Students can apply for funding with a faculty mentor or for an independent project. See the website for details and application deadlines. Past sustainability related projects have investigated the carrying capacity of Moose populations, a Carbon Baseline Study for the Municipality of Anchorage, and the geochemical impacts of abandoned gold mines.

Resilience and Adaptive Management Group
What: The RAM group is a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural research team that investigates a variety of resilience matters in Alaska. Current research includes an investigation of environmental knowledge of Alaskan Elders. Other work focuses on agent based modeling and Resilience Mapping of Social Ecological Systems.
