Overwhelming scientific evidence suggests that the world is rapidly exhausting key resources and putting future generations at risk of living in a significantly diminished world. However sustainability is defined, UAA is committed to ensuring that our graduates are citizens who can capably and quickly work to ensure the long-term health and vitality of our cultural, economic, environmental and social systems in our city, state, the nation and the world.
In 2004, UAA's Chancellor, Faculty Senate President, and USUAA President made UAA a signatory to the University Leaders for a Sustainable Future's Talloires Declaration, a 10-point action plan signed by more than 300 universities worldwide. The Declaration recognizes the key role higher education plays in making the changes necessary to produce graduates capable of ensuring the integrity of the economic, social, ecological and health systems of our communities into the future. The United Nations has recognized education's vital role in addressing our global challenge by declaring 2005-2014 the "Decade of Education for Sustainable Development."
