Biography
Anita Algiene was born and raised in Golden, Colorado. However, she began her backstage career
in 1997, while working towards her undergraduate degree at South Dakota State
University. She became the props master and one of the scenic designers for the
Prairie Repertory Theatre's summer program.
After completing her degree in 1998, she continued as a freelance scenic
designer and props master while working on her Master's of
Science in Communications & Theatre at SDSU. During that time she was honored to accept the position as
the props master for the Barrington Stage Company in Massachusetts in the
summer of 1999.
After completing her M.S. degree in 2000 she took up residence in New
Orleans where she worked as a freelance scenic designer for the New Orleans Youth
Theatre Company, theatrical musical director for St. Martin's
Episcopal School and props master for Central City Opera. In 2003 Algiene was offered full
scholarship and stipend to attend Tulane University to work towards her Master
of Fine Arts degree in Theatrical Design.
While in graduate school she was elected class representative, offered
an internship with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and was the recipient
of the John J. Southerland Award for Excellence in Scenic Design. Anita joined the faculty of the University of Alaska
Anchorage as a Term Assistant Professor of Scenic Design and Technical
Direction in August of 2006. She
continues to work in the community as a scenic designer, technical director,
photographer and stagehand as well as teaching drama classes to kids through
the Greatland Christian Church.
