How to Establish a VPN Connection on Windows

Article Purpose

In this article, the reader will learn to setup and configure their UAA VPN connection, using the built in system that is on your computer. 

Users will need to know what version of Windows they are currently running on, that way you are aware of which steps you need to follow to establish this connection. If you are unaware of which version your Windows is on, please contact the UAA IT Call Center to verify.

Needed Materials

​Windows Operating System (i.e.: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7)
UAA or UA domain username and password

Steps to Resolution

​Creating a VPN Connection

To setup a new VPN connection, you will first need to access the Network Connections category within the Control Panel of your computer.

Windows XP and newer versions, all have a category view and a Classic or Icon view. For instructions on how to set your Control Panel to Classic or Icon view, please see the instructions below:

  • Windows XP
    1. Click Start.
    2. Click Control Panel.
    3. On the left hand side of the screen, Control Panel will have one of two options available, Switch to Classic View, or Switch to Category View. Please ensure that the computer states Switch to Category View as this means the Control Panel is currently using Classic View mode.
  • Windows Vista
    1. Click Start.
    2. Click Control Panel.
    3. On the left hand side of the screen, Control Panel will have two options available, Control Panel Home, or Classic View. Please ensure that the computer states Classic View, as this means the Control Panel is currently using Classic View mode.
  • Windows 7
    1. Click Start.
    2. Click Control Panel.
    3. Check in the top right hand corner of your Control Panel. It will either say Category View or Icon View (large or small). Ensure that Icon View is selected.
  • Windows 8
    1. Click Settings.
    2. Click Control Panel.
    3. Check in the top right hand corner of your Control Panel. It will either say Category View or Icon View (large or small). Ensure that Icon View is selected.

Use the following steps to setup the connection:

  • Windows XP
  1. Click Network Connections.
  2. On the left hand side of the screen, clickCreate a new connection.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Choose Connect to the network at my workplace then click Next.
  5. Choose Virtual Private Network connection then click Next.
  6. Please type in: UAA for the Company Name then click Next.
  7. Choose Do not dial the initial connection then click Next.
  8. Please type in: 229.131.26 then click Next.
  9. Choose Anyone’s use then click Next.
  10. Click Finish and the connection setup is completed.
  11. Open the new connection, underNetwork Connections.
  12. Insert your UAA or UA domain username and password, then click Connect.
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7
    1. Click Network and Sharing Center.
    2. Windows Vista users: On the left hand side of the screen, click Set up a connection or network.
      Windows 7 users: On the bottom section of the screen, click Set up a connection or network.
    3. Choose Connect to a workplace then click Next.
      Choose Use my Internet connection (VPN).
      Please type in: 137.229.131.26 for the Internet Address
    4. Type UAA for the Destination name then click Next.
    5. Please insert your UAA or UA domain username and password, make sure Remember this password is checked. For the Domain please type in: UAA.ALASKA.EDU.
    6. Click Connect.
  • Windows 8
  1. Click on Network and Sharing Center.
  2. On the bottom section of the screen, click Set up a connection or network.
  3. ChooseConnect to a workplace then click Next.
    Choose Use my Internet connection (VPN).
    Please type in:229.131.26 for the Internet Address.
  4. Type UAA for the Destination name then click Next.
  5. Please check the Remember my credentials and the Allow other people to use this connection 
  6. Click Create.
  7. Once the connection is created, your VPN connection will show up on your list of networks, click on the VPN connection and click Connect.
  8. Insert your UAA or UA domain username and password, then click OK.

Congratulations, you have now created your VPN connections using the built in system on your Windows computer.

Additional Information

​Please note that this guide is designed to assist users who are employees of UAA. This system will allow users to have access to programs they need while away from their office or working from home. It allows users to still be a part of the UAA network, when not physically on campus.
