How to install the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher for Windows

Article Purpose

This article addresses how to install the new Blackboard Collaborate Launcher on Windows systems. For returning Collaborate customers, the way Collaborate sessions and recordings are accessed has changed. Previously, launching a new meeting would download a file named 'meeting.jnlp' which was ran by the local systems default Java installation. All new sessions will instead download a file named 'meeting.collab' which will require the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher to run.

Needed Materials

The Blackboard Collaborate Launcher is installed by a file named ‘BlackboardCollaborateLauncher-Win.msi’. To download the file, follow the below instructions:

  1. Navigate to an active Collaborate meeting in Blackboard as if to join a scheduled meeting.
  2. Click the button “Join Room”. If this is your first time joining a meeting after June 15th 2014, Blackboard will automatically prompt you to download the new launcher. Otherwise, see the helper text below the button and select the link to download the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.
  3. Your computer will start downloading a file named ‘BlackboardCollaborateLauncher-Win.msi’. How the file is downloaded will vary depending on your browser:
    1. Chrome:
The file will appear in the download bar at the bottom of the window. Select the file once it has finished downloading.
    2. Internet Explorer:
A prompt at the bottom of the window will ask if you want to Run, Save, or Cancel. Select Run.
    3. Firefox:
A prompt to save the file will pop up. Select Save. Open your downloads and select file once it has finished downloading.

Steps to Resolution

Once BlackboardCollaborateLauncher-Win.msi has been downloaded and launched, follow the below instructions to install the software:

  1. At the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher Setup main page, select Next.
  2. Select Install. Wait for the system to finish installing the software.
  3. Select Finish.

NOTE: If you cannot install software on your computer, or if the installer fails to run for any reason, see below Additional Information: Cannot install Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.
