UAA student government to host gubernatorial debate focused on the PFD

Oct. 9, 2018

What role should the Permanent Fund Dividend play in addressing Alaska’s fiscal crisis? Alaska gubernatorial candidates will debate this topic at UAA's Wendy Williamson Auditorium on Monday, Oct. 15, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., in a free event, open to the public.

A panel of journalists from the Anchorage Daily News, moderated by Steve Johnson, director of the UAA Seawolf Debate program, will question each candidate on his respective position about how to manage the PFD relative to the state of Alaska’s current financial troubles.

Gov. Bill Walker, an Independent, former U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, a Democrat, and Billy Toien, a Libertarian, have confirmed attendance. Former state Sen. Mike Dunleavy, a Republican, declined due to a scheduling conflict.

The Union of Students of the University of Alaska Anchorage (USUAA) is organizing the event. Co-sponsors include the Anchorage Daily News, UAA Economics Club, Atwood Foundation and Seawolf Debate program.

Free parking is available in the West and South parking lots. View the campus map at uaa.alaska.edu/map. For more information about this event, visit the USUAA website.
