UAA Black Student Union to host 55th anniversary celebration of March on Washington

Celebration to take place Aug. 30

Aug. 21, 2018

The UAA Black Student Union, in collaboration with campus and community partners, is pleased to announce “March on Washington: ‘I Have a Dream,’” a celebration of the 55th anniversary of the March on Washington in 1963, which culminated in Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

The celebration honors the March on Washington’s original program, while bringing its context into a contemporary setting. This historical march had a profound impact on the advancement of civil rights and equality, the effects of which still resonate today. The program will feature Anchorage speakers, including Mayor Ethan Berkowitz, as well as performances by Clark Middle School students, Underground Dance Company and Anchorage Community Theatre. It will conclude with a screening of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

The event will take place on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018, in the UAA Fine Arts Building’s Recital Hall. A short reception with refreshments will take place at 6:30 p.m. followed by the program from 7-9 p.m. Attendees are invited to enjoy refreshments and speak with campus and community partners.

UAA students and the general public can reserve their free tickets at For more information, contact Cheryl Williams, UAA Black Student Union president, at
