Nolan Klouda

Biography

As Executive Director, Nolan provides overall leadership for the University of Alaska Center for Economic Development, as well as support for other programs of the UAA Business Enterprise Institute. Prior to taking his current role in 2014, Nolan served as Associate Director. He has been a strategic advisor to tribal governments, municipal governments, non-profits, Alaska Native Corporations and private business groups, assisting them in realizing their economic goals. Nolan’s areas of professional interest include feasibility analysis, rural economic development, entrepreneurship and innovation policy, and engagement between the public and private sectors. He is a Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) through the International Economic Development Council and was named to Alaska’s “Top 40 Under 40” in 2015.

Gretchen Fauske

 

Biography

Gretchen is responsible for leading the entrepreneurship, marketing, and outreach efforts of UACED as well as providing strategic leadership for both UACED and BEI. She oversees the Alaska Business Plan competition, rural entrepreneurship training, the Global Entrepreneur in Residence program, AKStartups.com, and other areas. Prior to joining UACED, Gretchen worked in the State of Alaska Division of Economic Development, for U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski, and in the private sector. From this experience, she developed keen insight to private, political, and governmental drivers and their impact on the economy. Gretchen has worked on a number of award-winning economic development projects and was named to Alaska’s “Top 40 Under 40” in 2013.

Margo Fliss

Biography

Margo works on business plans, feasibility studies, and comprehensive economic development strategy plans, which assist with the development of communities across Alaska. She is also building financial models and evaluation frameworks for other projects led by CED. Prior to joining UACED in early 2016, Margo worked in the education sector for numerous school districts and universities in both California and Alaska, and served as a VISTA volunteer with UCLA BruinCorps. These experiences have provided her with expertise in program evaluation, development of outcome based metrics, education and energy policy, regression analysis, and policy analysis.

Biography

Simone joined UACED in March of 2015 as the AmeriCorps VISTA Leader. Currently, she supervises UACED’s AmeriCorps VISTA intermediary sponsorship, runs the Lemonade Day program, and engages youth in economic development. Simone’s focus is on partnership building and outreach to connect and engage youth across Alaska.

Steven Amundson

Biography

Steven is an experienced data analyst and researcher. Prior to joining UACED, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, provided quantitative research for the UAA Justice Center and the Alaska Department of Corrections, and worked as a youth counselor with the Division of Juvenile Justice. He is passionate about public service and using data as a foundation for actionable results.

Cassandra Maurer

Biography

Cassandra specializes in entrepreneurial project development, marketing and design. She supports various programs within UACED, including grant research, feasibility studies, material development and regularly works with the Alaska Cooperative Development Center. Cassandra has a background in community development and design thinking.

Biography

Mike is the Energy Coordinator VISTA at UACED. He is developing and implementing a business assistance program for rural Alaskans to help cut the costs of energy with an emphasis on microgrids. His goal is to create a best practices handbook so that communities can reduce costs and open up cash for additional economic development projects. Mike’s first year of service with the VISTA program was with the Harvest Against Hunger program in Moses Lake, Washington.

Julia Casey

Julia Casey

 

Biography

Julia focuses on assisting startups through education, technical assistance, and identifying finance opportunities. Her background is in e-commerce and she is experienced in working with entrepreneurial ventures at varying stages of development and scope. Much of her work during her year of service as an AmeriCorps VISTA will focus on capacity building within Alaska’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and developing digital tools for use by startups across the state.
