Shirley received her MA in Education from the University of Washington. In 1984 she attended Harvard for further studies. 


Shirley was born and raised in Hoonah, Alaska, a small village in Southeast Alaska. She attended BIA elementary school in Hoonah and then went to Mt. Edgecumbe Boarding School in Sitka where she graduated in 1953.

Teaching Responsibilities

Shirley teaches Tlingit language courses at UAA. 

Professional & Department Service

- She received the Educator of the Year award from the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) in 2007.

- In 2012 Shirley received the UAA College of Arts and Sciences Teacher of the Year award.
