UAA-Clark Pre-Engineering Academy

The UAA-Clark Pre-Engineering Academy is a collaboration between the University of Alaska Anchorage College of Engineering and Clark Middle School with the goal of growing Alaska's future engineers right here within Anchorage. The Pre-Engineering Academies are offered in two levels: an introductory level for 7th-8th graders, and a Version 2.0 program for 8th-9th graders who have completed the introductory year and wish to continue their pursuit of engineering.


UAA-Clark Pre-Engineering Academy

Eligibility:

This program is available to 7th & 8th grade students with an interest in exploring engineering careers. Priority will be given to Clark Middle School students, though seats are also made available to additional 7th and 8th graders throughout Anchorage.

Program Outcomes:

  • Students will gain a strengthened understanding of engineering careers and the many disciplines within engineering (specifically: civil, mechanical, computer science, electrical, or geomatics)
  • Students will have an understanding of basic academic classes and concepts needed to build a successful foundation for pursuing engineering degrees and careers.
  • Students will improve their troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills.

UAA-Clark Pre-Engineering Academy v. 2.0

The Version 2.0 program is made available to students who have completed the initial program and are interested in deepening their knowledge of 1-2 disciplines while working on a community based project under mentorship and guidance of UAA students and faculty.

Eligibility:

This program is available to 8th-9th grade students who have completed one full year of the Pre-Engineering Academy. Students must express interest in continued exploration and pursuit of engineering careers.

Program Outcomes:

  • Students will deepen their understanding of specific engineering fields of their interest (civil, mechanical, computer science, electrical, or geomatics).
  • Students will develop a plan of action and academic pathway leading to their careers of choice.
  • Students will develop a stronger understanding of and implementation of the Engineering Process through  a community based project.
