Hosted by the University of Washington, the Summer Medical Dental Education Program (SMDEP) is a six-week enrichment program for underrepresented college freshmen and sophomores interested in medicine or dentistry. It is funded by Robert Wood Johnson. SMDEP is designed to give participants exposure to the fields of medicine and dentistry and to boost academic skills. The program features enrichment courses in the basic sciences and math, clinical experiences, career development activities, learning and study skills seminars and a financial planning workshop. There are also visits to migrant camps and lectures on health and health care disparities.Ten campuses around the country offer SMDEP. The University of Washington accepts residents of all states with a focus on the WWAMI region which includes Alaska. The program takes place in Seattle. SMDEP provides housing, travel and a stipend.
2016 Program Dates: June 19 - July 30
Admissions deadline March 1, 2016. Admissions decisions are released on April 1 for applications completed after February 1.
