Associate of Applied Science, Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Overview

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program provides education and training to prepare students for employment as a general sonographer. Graduates are prepared to sit for a national certification exam in diagnostic medical sonography.  Admission to the full-major DMS program is competitive.  For full application instructions please review the information on the Application Procedure webpage.

  • Prerequisite Courses

    Show, from official transcripts, successful completion of the following courses with a minimum grade of C:

    • WRTG A111 Writing Across Contexts (3 credits)
    • WRTG A212 Writing and the Professions (3 credits)
      or WRTG A213 Writing and the Sciences (3 credits)
    • Complete 3 credits from the Oral Communication Skills GER list. (3 credits)
    • BIOL A111 Human Anatomy and Physiology I (4 credits)
    • BIOL A112 Human Anatomy and Physiology II (4 credits)
    • MA A101 Medical Terminology (3 credits)
    • MA A104 Essentials of Human Disease (3 credits)
    • MATH A105 Intermediate Algebra (or higher) (3 credits)
    • PHYS A123 College Physics I (3 credits)
      or RADT A151 Radiographic Physics (2 credits) (department approval required for Pre-DMS students)
  • General Degree Requirements

    General degree requirements for the AAS Diagnostic Medical Sonography program are satisfied upon successful completion of prerequisite courses.

  • Major Requirements

    Students will be required to physically attend classes at the Anchorage campus for the first year and may be assigned to clinical sites in other Alaska communities at their expense during the second year. Due to the risks associated with working in a health care setting, students may be required to provide proof of health insurance prior to starting clinical training.
