    Request Information

Surgical technologists, otherwise known as scrub techs, are operating room specialists who perform specific duties for pre-, intra-, and postoperative case management. Surgical technologists must be knowledgeable in asepsis and sterile technique, and must be able to properly care for instrumentation, equipment and supplies. Surgical case management, wound care and closure, and surgical patient care and safety all fall within the realm of the surgical technologist’s responsibilities. Surgical technologists make sure the operating room is ready by gathering sterile supplies and checking equipment. They apply equipment to prepare for incisions and most importantly, they ensure that the operating environment is as sterile as possible.

As a student in the Surgical Technology program, you’ll develop skills in comprehensive case management, sterilization techniques, operating procedures, wound care and closure, and patient care and safety. Students get hands-on experience using the latest surgical equipment in UAA’s state-of-the-art labs, and get real-world training through practicum placements in local medical facilities. The AAS in Surgical Technology prepares you to sit for the Certified Surgical Technologist examination.

Surgical technologists are in high demand and work in a variety of settings, including:

  • Hospitals
  • Outpatient surgical centers
  • Central sterile processing departments
  • Private physicians’ practices
  • Medical companies

Most surgical technologists work in hospitals, primarily in operating rooms. Some are found in medical or dental offices where outpatient surgery is performed.

Applications to the program are open! Visit the Program Application Procedure webpage for more information.
