NURSING GRADUATE PROGRAMS
The MS in Nursing explores advanced professional nursing practice, theory, research and health care delivery systems—all within the context of Alaska’s diverse communities, including rural and underserved populations. Students interested inclinical practice can choose between FNP and PMHNP concentrations. Alternatively, students can concentrate in nursing leadership, with an emphasis on education.
As a student in one of the graduate certificate programs, you’ll build on your graduate degree and your current speciality, integrating theory-based advanced practice nursing courses and specialty clinical practice. Depending on your interests and career goals, you can choose between FNP or PMHNP specializations. The graduate certificate in nursing education provides you with the theory and skills you need to enter the high-demand field of nursing education. The program focuses on teaching and learning, curriculum development, and curriculum evaluation. Students also learn to utilize new technology for learning and collaboration. A teaching practicum gives you real-world experience delivering your own curriculum on a topic that you’re passionate about.
As the highest degree in nursing practice, the DNP is designed for nurses with an MS in Nursing degree who are currently certified in an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) role. The program emphasizes advanced nursing practice, theory, research and leadership, with a focus on the unique needs of Alaska’s diverse urban and rural communities. As a DNP student, you’ll culminate the program by developing and defending a scholarly capstone project on a topic you choose that reflects your professional interests and goals.

Student Spotlight: MiLee Yu – 2025 BSW Student of the Year
MiLee Yu is a graduate of the University of Alaska Anchorage’s Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program, and is currently pursuing a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. In September 2025, MiLee was awarded the BSW Student of the Year award at the Biennial National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Alaska Chapter Conference.

UAA’s School of Social Work $1.2 million Department of Education grant will fill school social worker shortage in Alaska
UAA's School of Social Work received a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to address the need for Alaska social workers in a K-12 setting. The School-Based Social Work Education and Network Development program (SSWEND) aims to graduate a cohort of 31 fellows by 2026 who will increase the amount of school-based mental health service providers in high-needs schools.

A Gala was held to celebrate the School of Social Work Spring graduates. About 100 people attended the event, filling the room with bustling conversation. Five students graduating from the Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work programs share why social work motivates them.

BSW student Katie Lester wins scholarship and hopes to continue advocacy work
Katie Lester, a senior in the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program at the University of Alaska Anchorage, recently received $8,000 from the National Federation for the Blind (NFB) scholarship program with multiple sponsors donating to the scholarship. Katie was one of 30 scholarship recipients and her award was specifically for academic excellence and service to the community.
