How competitive is it to get into the DMS program?
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is competitive in the sense it receives more applications than spots available. The competitiveness of the program is determined by the number of applications received during the application cycle and therefore changes.
Is the UAA DMS program accredited?
There are two types of accreditation for educational programs: regional and programmatic. This program is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, but doesn't have programmatic accreditation at this time. We are working towards obtaining programmatic accreditation from The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), which accredits medical sonography programs.
Can I become certified if you don't have programmatic accreditation?
Yes. It is possible to become certified by both registering organizations.
Do I need to go through a Radiology Technology program to be a sonographer?
What type of healthcare degree or certification* meets the prerequisite?
There isn't a definitive list. However, the degree/certification must be in a profession that is direct patient care-related. Students should inquire with the program advisor if they are unsure about their qualifications.
*In some professions, a license is issued instead of certification.
What type of recent work experience meets the application requirement?
Work experience, like the degree/certification requirement, must be in a profession that is direct patient care-related. There is no minimum amount of work experience needed to apply; however, it must be within the last five years.
How are students selected for an interview?
Student applications are reviewed, and those applicants meeting the requirements are offered an interview.
How many students do you accept?
The number of students selected each year is between six and eight.
Do you have a wait-list?
No. Students not selected need to reapply. Those who reapply are given equal consideration among the current applicant pool.
