Corrosion

April 28, 2021, 6:00-7:00 PM

Rust and Rot: Corrosion Chemistry (Dr. Raghu Srinivasan)

What is the difference between rust and corrosion? Why doesn't gold corrode? Please join us for a fun evening to learn more about corrosion and how it affects every one of us. Corrosion is ubiquitous and it is defined as the degradation of metals when exposed to a corrosive environment. Atmospheric corrosion is surely the most visible of all corrosion processes and you can see that in rusty bridges, flag poles, buildings, cars, ships and outdoor monuments. I will be focusing on my recent research work on atmospheric corrosion in a cold arctic environment.

Whodunit? An introduction to engineering failure analysis (Dr. Matthew Cullin)

A pipeline leaks, a bridge collapses, and rocket explodes. The goal of failure analysis is to determine the root cause of the failure in order to prevent future occurrences. It is the engineering version of CSI. This talk will introduce some of the tools and strategies used to investigate engineering failures.
