Americans with Disabilities Act Celebrations

Collaborative celebrations have taken place in Anchorage, Alaska to show appreciaton for, and support of, the disability rights movement as recognized in the Americans with Disabilities Act. This page highlights moments from those celebrations.

The annual Anchorage area ADA Celebrations have been coordinated by Access Alaska. Additional sponsors have included:

2011 ADA Event with Lauren Potter

Actress Lauren PotterLauren Potter is a twenty-year old actress with Down syndrome who has starred on both stage and screen. She is best known for her role as the cheerleader “Becky Jackson” on the Emmy and Oscar awarding winning Fox show “Glee” and has also been featured in a new web series called Leader of the Pack as well as a variety of advocacy videos.

Lauren has been actively working to promote both the "Spread the word to End the Word" campaign as well as the Disable Bullying campaign.

We are thrilled that she will be in Alaska to help us celebrate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. She will be in Fairbanks on July 19, and in Anchorage on July 21.

The 17th Anniversary Celebration of hte Americans with Disabilities Act was held on August 6th at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. The event featured Alaska native dancers, a public speaking event with book signing, a silent auction, and night of dancing with music and refreshments.

Guest speaker Ryan Knighton, author of Cockeyed: a Memoir, spoke of his experiences with vision loss.

The 16th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act was held in the UAA Student Union. The event included a free screening of "Murderball" followed by a public speaking event with autograph signing. There was also a catered buffet and silent auction.

Mark Zupan spoke of his experiences as a member of the US paralympic wheelchair rugby team.
