Management & Governance
IT governance is critical to align technology strategy, direction and spending with the needs of UAA's highly diverse academic and administrative needs. At UAA, IT Governance and management processes are tightly coupled.
As shown below, IT Governance is focused on strategy, mission and goals which define UAA's technology strategy and major direction. The Council, with its representative membership described below, ensures alignment between UAA's community and technology strategy and direction.
IT Management is focused on translating goals into technology infrastructure and providing a wide variety of technology-based customer services to UAA's students, faculty, staff and patrons. The Office of the CIO and IT Services are the principal groups involved here although UAA's campuses have distributed technology staff which are directly attached to certain colleges, departments and campuses which also have service delivery responsibilities.
University Technology Council
The Council is the centerpiece of UAA’s IT governance structure. It is a Chancellor-appointed group whose nominees come from all parts of UAA’s community. Explanation of Council inclusion and alignment with major community groups is described in University Technology Council Representation.
The Council is chaired by the CIO and one of the annually-appointed representatives. Monthly meetings are held during each academic year from September through May. Additional meetings and retreats typically occur throughout the year associated with major work on UAA’s strategic technology plan or significant initiatives.
Each year, the Council establishes charges for itself and the Working Groups that it creates. Working Groups are extensions of the Council that are open to participation by all interested UAA faculty, staff and students. Working Groups permit the Council to more efficiently research and discuss significant technology issues. Currently, the Council supports the eLearning and the Computer Lab working groups. See Council & Working Group Charges for current structure and charges.
Student Technology Fee
A major responsibility of the Council is to provide oversight of use of UAA’s Student Technology Fees. See Student Technology Fee for more information about how the Anchorage campus’ fees are used.
