April 2007: Diversity Workshop

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Everyone is welcome to experience an award winning, experimental Welcoming Diversity workshop on April 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Library 307. The presenters are from the National Coalition Building Institute, a international non profit training institute that has worked with thousands of colleges and universities thorough the world. This event is free and lunch is provided, but space is limited.  Participants must attend the full session.

The workshop will help people to do the following:

  • celebrate their similarities and differences,
  • recognize the misinformation they have learned about various groups, including their own,
  • learn about and reevaluate personal attitudes and behaviors that are based on the impact of prejudice and discrimination,
  • claim pride in their group identities,
  • understand the personal impact of discrimination through the telling of stories, and
  • learn hands-on tools for dealing effectively with offensive remarks and behaviors.

On April 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Library 307, the presenters will offer a free public lecture on best practices for creating diverse learning communities at universities. For more information visit www.ncbi.org or e-mail aner@uaa.alaska.edu to register. This event is sponsored by the UAA Office of the Provost, UAA Diversity Action Council, Faculty Senate Diversity Committee and the Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence.
