For bird lovers who haven't yet made it to the Aleutians-and non-birders who have yet to explore Alaska's wild islands-this slide show is the perfect opportunity to see what only a few visitors get to experience each year. Some species of the Aleutian Islands include Cormorants, Auklets, Black-legged Kittiwakes, Horned and Tufted Puffins, Snowy Owls, Gray-crowned Rosy Finches and Snow Buntings, among others.

Birds of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska represents the first in a series of avian monographs published jointly by the Nuttall Ornithological Club-the oldest natural history society in North America, and the American Ornithologists' Union-the largest ornithological society in the world. Birds of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska is authored by Daniel D. Gibson and G. Vernon Byrd, and edited by Douglas Causey.  Gibson has studied the natural history of Alaska's birds for more than 40 years-as manager of the bird collection of the University of Alaska museum, as a naturalist, and as an author of numerous scientific papers.  Byrd is a supervisory wildlife biologist at the USFWS Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, which includes the Aleutian Islands.  He has studied and written about birds in the Aleutians for over 35 years.
