UAA featured in national Student Affairs publication

A question was asked by the Student Affairs Best Practices Reports publishers: What is your single, most innovative, best practice for student engagement? UAA's Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Linda Lazzell and Dean of Students Bruce Schultz answered with the submission Student Engagement within Student Affairs through Collaboration at UAA: The CAMA-I Room and the Alaska Native Rural Outreach Program. This contribution not only got the programs featured in the national report, it also earned them recognition for most innovative submission.

The report describes how the collaboration of many groups brought about the new CAMA'I Room in the UAA Commons that houses the new Alaska Native Rural Outreach Program (ANROP).  The CAMA'I Room, a student programming and activity center, is successfully providing Native-focused activities and a "home-away-from-home" to ease the transition of Native and rural students living on campus.  ANROP focuses on providing a high level of care and interest in the personal adjustment to college and the academic success of Native and rural students living on campus by connecting these students to academic support services and culturally appropriate counseling services.  Having this network of support means students are much more likely to stay in school and be successful in their personal and academic endeavors.

The reports are published by Extreme Entrepreneurship Education based in New York.  The aim of the reports is to provide fresh, innovative perspectives that can be used as models on college campuses.  Previous reports have been on the topics of virtual communities, corporate sponsorship, student leadership, freshman seminars, orientation programs and event promotion.  To learn more about the organization visit www.student-affairs.org.
