Mariel Savage, a senior in the UAA School of Social Work, was chosen for a summer internship through the WINS program with the National Council of Urban Indian Health (NCUIH) in Washington D.C. The National Council of Urban Indian Health supports and develops quality accessible healthcare programs for all American Indians and Alaska Natives living in urban communities through advocacy, training, education, and leadership development. Mariel will be interning with their Methamphetamine and Suicide Prevention Initiative, where she will be studying and researching health-related policy development in those two areas.

Mariel was chosen for the prestigious WINS program (Washington D.C. Internships for Native Students), sponsored by American University, which awards university credit for completion of coursework and internships in this program. The WINS program offers students of sovereign American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian nations the opportunity to build leadership skills while living, studying and interning in Washington, D.C. Participating students will gain professional work experience through interning at a federal agency or private firm, take courses focusing on Native American public policy concerns, and participate in social and cultural extracurricular activities.

Mariel is actively involved in a number of UAA campus activities, including the Student Government Concert Board. She is also on the School of Social Work Student Coalition, where she participates in fundraisers and service activities such as the Thanksgiving Blessing, and in which she will have a leadership position next academic year. Recently she was chosen for a week-long clinical rotation program in Kotzebue, and was awarded the School of Social Work Syril's Rising Star award.
