UAA Track and Field students receive prestigious awards

UAA senior Laura Carr was named Thursday to the 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic District VIII College Division Women's Track and Field / Cross Country First Team. Carr, an art major with a 3.59 GPA, helped the women's cross-country team to its first ever Great Northwest Athletic Conference and West Region titles last fall. In Track and Field, Carr registered her fourth all-conference accolade with a second-place finish in the 5,000 meters, followed by her third trip to the NCAA Championships. Read more at

Rookie Micah Chelimo was selected Thursday as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track & Field Male co-Freshman of the Year for his performances during the 2010 season. Chelimo set a new GNAC record in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays with a time of 8:49.31. The Kenyan then went on to break the conference meet record in the same event with a time of 9:02.79. Read more at
