UAA's Community and Technical College has taken the lead in completing the chartering process to establish a Phi Theta Kappa chapter at UAA's Anchorage campus. The Anchorage campus has been designated as the Beta Tau Delta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society for students enrolled in any associate degree program. Other Phi Theta Kappa chapters in Alaska include: Kenai Peninsula College, Kenai River Campus; Kenai Peninsula College, Kachemak Bay Campus; Kodiak College; Matanuska-Susitna College; Prince William Sound Community College; and University of Alaska Southeast, Ketchikan Campus.

Phi Theta Kappa's mission is two-fold: 1) recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and (2) provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming. To achieve its mission, Phi Theta Kappa provides opportunities for the development of leadership and service; for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals; for lively fellowship for scholars; and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.

"The Community and Technical College welcomes new campus opportunities for recognizing and encouraging student scholarship, particularly for the 2,000+ students enrolled in associate degree programs on the Anchorage campus," said CTC Dean Karen Schmitt. "The Community and Technical College has over 800 students enrolled in associate degree programs-the most of any college on campus-so we are pleased to support this chapter and help develop its traditions."

Phi Theta Kappa is the oldest honor society for community college students, and the only one founded by college presidents. Today, the honor society includes 1,250 chapters worldwide. Approximately 100,000 students are inducted annually and receive a wide array of benefits and opportunities for academic and personal growth through the Phi Theta Kappa experience.
